SKETCH 101: Introduction to Sketch Comedy

All classes are 3 hours in length, unless otherwise noted. Our workshops are designed for adults and recommended for persons 18 or older, however, some exceptions may be made.

Complete Course Description

This class will be an active writing workshop for sketch comedy. Although students must have completed DSI Level 2, Scenic Improv, NO WRITING EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY. You must be able to write sketches outside of the scheduled classtime. Meet for 2 1/2 hours each week for 6 weeks. Students bring a new sketch to each class each week; You will read it, learn how to critique it, and learn how to rewrite it.

Week 1: open season, bring something you have with no prior direction, just put an idea you already have on paper
Week 2: strong character-based sketch
Week 3: strong game-based sketch
Week 4: parody
Week 5: presentational piece
Week 6: open season, write you want, run thru

Each student will choose their favorite sketch, cast and direct it under the guidance of the Sketch Comedy 101 instructor. These sketches are presented at the Student Showcase.
