IMPROV 101 explores the basics of comedy improvisation: team-building, trust, speed, status, active listening, and agreement. Students learn to be fearless and have fun on stage using the DSI approach to improv comedy.

No comedy or theater experience necessary.

FREE ADMISSION WHILE ENROLLED. CLASS RUNS for 2 1/2 HOURS each week with optional office hours after class as available.

Harrison Brookie

Harrison joined Clemson University's comedy improv group, Mock Turtle Soup, in 2004. For the next four years, he performed short and longform in Clemson, along with Atlanta, Nashville, Orlando and Chicago. He has attended the Black Box, Implosion, Charleston, Richmond, Del Close, Spontaneous Combustion and North Carolina Comedy Arts Festivals, training under a variety of instructors from The Annoyance, iO, Comedy Sportz, SAK and Second City theaters. In 2007, Harrison also coached a high school improv team in Anderson, SC. In 2008, he moved to North Carolina with his wife to teach high school history and economics.

Harrison is currently a member of the DSI Comedy Theater Company, performing with THE 708, MISTER DIPLOMAT and two-person team POUND FOR POUND. He also coaches the house Harold team Kid Lincoln and is a resident instructor at the DSI Comedy Training Center.

Zach Ward

Chapel Hill native and proud Carolina graduate, Zach Ward has been performing and directing comedy for over 20 years.

Zach owns DSI where he serves as Executive Producer. He serves as Executive Producer and Artistic Director for the North Carolina Comedy Arts Festival. In the world of comedy, Zach has been employed by ImprovBoston (Managing Director), the Chicago Improv Festival (Associate Producer), Toronto Improv Festival (Producer), Richmond Improv Festival (Producer) and ComedySportz Chicago.

Zach has received critical acclaim from the Chicago Reader and the Chicago Tribune for his performance with DUAL EXHAUST (Critic's Choice, INDY PICK, Top 10 "Most Influential Comedy Duos of the Past Decade") and THE BEATBOX (Critic's Choice, Best Bet, "Top 5 Latenight Shows in Chicago"). Zach can currently be seen performing with MISTER DIPLOMAT and on the road at theaters around the country.

Zach has studied the art of improvisation with Todd Stashwick (Burn Mahattan), Mick Napier and Susan Messing (Annoyance), Bob Dassie, Craig Cackowski and TJ Jagodowski (ImprovOlympic), Matt Besser (Upright Citizens Brigade), Amy Poehler (Saturday Night Live), Michael Gelman (Second City), and with every student he teaches.
